Build a birdhouse!
For the Birds Logo
“Homelessness is for the Birds"

A project to benefit the residents of the Friendship Service Center of New Britain.

Show your support for this event. Use your talents and creativity. Construct and donate a unique birdhouse to be sold or auctioned with all proceeds to be used to aid Friendship Service Center clients.

Your birdhouse will be displayed in the New Britain area during the summer and sold in the fall at the Friendship Service Center's Grand Opening for the Arch Street Housing project.Your name or the name of your group entry will be displayed with your birdhouse and in a program booklet available at the event...

Where to start?

Example Bird HouseCheck at your local library, lumber supply retail stores or local shops which sell materials and unpainted birdhouses ready for your custom decorating.

We are looking forward to receiving handsome purely functional houses constructed to specifications for particular birds and meant to withstand the elements. Also, functional houses that push the limits of your artistic imagination, various shapes, sizes, and styles. We welcome "flights of fancy" homes, objects of beauty or humor or wit and whimsy. The limits in the category are equal to the limits of your unique creativity.

Example Bird HouseConsider and expand upon the following: Ethnic themes...Quotes from a favorite writer or song...Mythological interpretations... Games... Sports... Environmentalism... Architectural Marvels... Multiple Housing...Nursery Rhymes...Replicas of Local Businesses or Landmarks... Incorporate photos or mirrors... Puzzles... Food Themes...Jewel Boxes..Knitting and Quilting... Tech Themes...PURE GLITZ...

All of your examples of "love made visible" will aid the clients of the Friendship Service Center of New Britain

The Friends of the Friendship Service Center

The Friends of the FSC was founded in March of 2006 by
a small group that created the following Mission Statement:
  1. To raise awareness of the Friendship Service Center and all the programs within the communities it serves.

  2. To assist the staff of the Friendship service Center with tasks that can be accomplished by volunteers.

  3. To do some small scale fundraising to provide the residents with non-budgeted items.

  4. To develop friendships with other members of the community who want to help those experiencing difficult times in their lives.

Our accomplishments to date:

Two Vera Bradley Handbag sales
A “Declutter and Do Good Wine and Cheese Tasting Event”
Two newsletters of 350 mailings each
Holiday gift storing, sorting and wrapping for the residents and families
Pizza Party with the residents
Rock Cats Baseball game tickets that allowed 53 residents to take in a game
Food Share Walk-Against Hunger Team and a monetary donation
Purchase of herbs for the soup kitchen
Funding for internet service for Transitional Living Program participants
Envelope stuffing and telephone calls for the Capital Campaign
Donation of a computer and printer and time spent on training how to use them
Help with ticket sales and distribution of posters for the Bike Shop Pasta dinner

…and this is only the beginning, with more Friends we could do so much more!
